[Harvey's leaning against the bulkhead by the window, watching Duster more than the skyline. Yeah, it's pretty damn impressive the first time. He grins at the question.]
Nah, that's the Sears Tower. Used to be the tallest building in the world. The big ones're all office buildings.
The place I lived was only five stories, it was - [He steps over, scans the city, and gestures more towards the southern end.] - more over that way, I guess. I could show ya better at street level, it's different seein' it from up here...
[Used to?! That's just mind boggling. The two towers Duster and his friends climbed were barely as tall as the Sears Tower, and that wasn't even the biggest one in Harvey's world?!
Well, judging by the other skyscrapers in the area, this shouldn't be as much of a surprise.]
Yeah, that sounds good. [Five is manageable. That's how big the hotel was.] So it's like a hotel, where you have your own places to stay, right? But with more people.
Yeah, somethin' like that. You get more space than a hotel, usually at least a couple rooms. Kinda depends how nice the place is.
[CLASS OVER look it's really not important. Harvey presses a few buttons on the console, zooming in on a street in the business district. It's still high up enough that the crowds and cars look like toys, but he seems to recognize what he's looking at.]
Ah, that's not right... [He presses a few more buttons.] I always have trouble with this computer stuff, gimme a sec. My old neighborhood's down a ways.
[Okay that makes some sense. Duster guesses apartments don't have fancy things like spas and bars, but he's pretty sure they have a public kitchen or something.]
Sure thing. I'll be on lookout. [Not that it's necessary, but it's an excuse to continue staring out the window. Man, Ryuunosuke was right: cities are cramped, even as they fly away from downtown. Good thing Duster isn't claustrophobic, or else he'd staple his way up to the roof the moment they touched ground.]
Do you live close to the beach? Is it true you don't know your neighbors? [He spots a train as it runs beneath them.] Chicago's big enough that you need a train to get from one place to another?!
[SO MANY QUESTIONS.] Ah. Where's the club you were mentioning earlier?
I actually don't live around here anymore. This is just where I grew up. Come to think of it, I ain't even sure that old building's still standing... [He thinks about that for a moment and shrugs.] ...but I know the club is. We can go check that out.
I'll show ya the trains, too. Most of 'em are underground.
[Duster has a strong urge to channel Dave or Allie and say something along the lines of "THAT IS HELLA SWEET" but...
He'll just stare in amazement.]
I can't believe...this world used to be so amazing! [Maybe not all cities are manifestations of the greed and false displays of happiness!] I can't wait to tell everyone back home about this.
[He steps back from the window to check up on his bass and music notes. The moment they touch ground, he is getting out of here and ready to check that place out.] You have some friends at the club that can set up a performance date sometime soon?
[Yeah, modern American cities are totally nothing like that, ha ha haaaaaa...]
Yeeeeeeah...I mean, I ain't seen the guy in a while, but we keep in touch. I'll introduce ya.
[The viewscreen has passed by anything that looks remotely club-like in nature. Harvey appears to be scoping out alleyways and the odd abandoned storefront. Eventually he settles on a corner somewhere that looks pretty clean.]
Okay, I'm gonna put us down there. Normal folks don't know that spaceships and crap are real, they'd flip their lids if they saw us beamin' in. And, uh - if anyone asks? We met in Minnesota.
Got it. Minnesota. [Wherever that is. No one ever mentions that state.] We need to call ourselves something. No club is going to let a nameless band perform.
[Bass and voice...those together have a subtle emotion. "Hope" is too strong a word, and at the same time, Duster wants both of their backgrounds to influence their image...]
How about "Lounge MC"? It references your songs and has half of DCMC's name. People love acronyms.
Oh. [Well, okay then!] I can see why, that's a mouthful.
[Harvey turns away, climbing up onto a nearby platform to stand on one of the circular outlines. He gestures for Duster to join him.] This is the beaming thingy, it'll take us down.
[And once they're both up, he'll signal the computer. From their perspective, there's a brief period of electric white light, before they're standing in an alleyway in Chicago. Harvey's already a little more wary, being down here, but first he turns to make sure Duster took the trip okay.]
[One moment we has collecting his things, the next he was standing in the cold nighttime streets of Chicago. Thankfully, tonight isn't one of those winter nights where the temperature severely dropped out of nowhere, but it's colder than anything Duster's experienced on the Nowhere Islands.
He clutches onto his double bass to find his bearings after the teleportation before the cold sets in.]
[He leads the way out the alley and around the corner. It's been years since he's been here, but he still seems fairly at ease, even as he tugs his collar up around his face. They're close enough to the club anyway, it's no big deal.]
Just follow my lead. [He says as they enter. It's empty, this being the middle of the day and all, but he winds his way to the back and lets himself in.] Hey, Tom, you here?
Next time, let's pretend we're not from somewhere cold.
[As long as he doesn't go outside, he's sure he can keep up that cover story. He rushes in after Harvey and relaxes when yes, they do heat the inside of the building. Thanks god and the spirits for modern technology. The bass rolls on the metal stand behind Duster as he makes his way through the halls, eyeing the passageway to the main dining area.]
Man, it's been a while since I've last been to a real club. What's this one's specialty? The waitresses? The music? The food?
Music, mostly. The food was okay last time I was here, but you don't come to a place like this for that.
[No comment on the waitresses; there's enough turnover at a club like this, and he's been away long enough, that anything he has to say is probably out of date.
Tom's still here, though - he found that out before he came. Another man, maybe a few years older than Harvey, comes out of an office and greets him with a smile and a handshake.]
Hey, Finevoice! What brings you back into town?
Oh, y'know, nothin' much. Thought I'd stop by for old times' sake. This is Duster, the friend I was tellin' you about.
[Duster straightens up and drags the bass upright before walking over for a handshake..] Nice to meet you. Harvey and I are looking forward to playing here.
[He glances at Harvey before looking back at Tom.] It's my first time in Chicago.
